Security is one of a human being's basic needs. Having the ability to protect oneself is essential to human survival. Most people are not trained in hand to hand combat, so there are various types of self defense equipment available to assist people in defending themselves when placed in dangerous situations.
For many people, guns are the self defense equipment of choice. For those who do not wish to deal with the licensing, safety, legal or moral issues that may be associated with using a gun as a method of self defense there are alternatives. Self defense batons, pepper sprays, stun guns, and kubotans are alternate types of self defense equipment that are easy to carry, conceal, and use.
Self defense batons fall under the category of self defense equipment known as impact weapons. Impact weapons are named as such because they are meant to strike an offender. The police are most well-known for carrying self defense batons. With proper training, a baton is a valuable piece of self defense equipment. If used improperly, like one would use a hammer or club, a baton can be taken away and used by the attacker to cause further harm, so it is important to not only have a baton but to learn how to use one.
Pepper spray is commonly used as a method of self defense. Pepper spray falls under the projectile category of self defense equipment because it allows one to reach an attacker from a distance. Pepper spray is a popular means of self defense because it is easy to use and easy to carry. There are pepper spray containers that attach to keychains. When approached by an offender, pepper spray is sprayed into the eyes of an attacker. While the attacker is temporarily blinded, it may be possible for one to get far enough away from the attacker to seek help.
Some types of self defense equipment are better used when combined with another form of self defense or training in the martial arts. Stun guns are one such item. Stun guns deliver an electric shock to an attacker and leave them unable to move when used properly. The drawback to using stun guns is that the electric currents may not penetrate an attacker's thick clothing and the stun gun would have to be held up against an attacker who may also have a weapon, which could prove to be very difficult. Using another method of self defense to disarm an attacker could allow one to properly use a stun gun.
Kubotans are another type of self defense equipment that act as keychains. Kubotans are five to six inch metal sticks that are attached to keychains. They are known for being easy to carry and to conceal. Kubotans can be used to strike or jab an attacker. They are most commonly used to poke an attacker in vulnerable areas of the body such as the groin, elbow, or kneecap. Kubotans are also used by those trained in martial arts.
Self defense equipment is most commonly purchased at local martial arts training centers. Martial arts centers often offer self defense classes which may include training with various types of self defense equipment as well. There are also specialty stores that carry self defense equipment. Hardware stores, hunting shops, and gun shops will often carry different types of self defense equipment. Even some supermarkets carry pepper sprays.
It is important to note that training increases the effectiveness of self defense equipment and decreases the likelihood that the attacker will be able to take the equipment away and use it to cause further harm. With proper use, self defense equipment can give one the window of opportunity needed to escape and find safety.
